The Gosaikunda Trek is a 10-day trek to a sacred alpine lake at 4,380 m in Langtang National Park, a short drive north of Kathmandu in the Rasuwa district. Gosaikunda is a freshwater lake held holy by both Hindus and Buddhists, and the trail to it climbs from terraced farmland and rhododendron forest into high pasture below the Langtang range.
The route starts with a drive to Dhunche (2,090 m), then walks up through Tamang and Sherpa villages, the cheese-making settlement of Sing Gompa (3,250 m), and rhododendron, oak and bamboo forest to the lake basin. Along the way the skyline opens onto Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal and peaks on the Tibetan border. Each August, the Janai Purnima full moon draws thousands of pilgrims to bathe in the lake.
The trek is graded easy to moderate: it is short and close to the capital, but the climb to 4,380 m means altitude still needs respect. Good fitness and warm gear matter on the cold, high days near the lake. The sections below cover the Langtang permit, difficulty, the sacred lake and festival, seasons and what to pack.

The Gosaikunda Trek is graded easy to moderate, which makes it a popular short trek, but the climb to the lake at 4,380 m means altitude is still a factor. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) can begin above roughly 2,500 m, and the gain from Sing Gompa (3,250 m) to the lake in a single day is the part to watch.
Days run 4 to 6 hours on forest and pasture trail, shorter than on the big circuits, but the high lake basin is cold and exposed. Basic fitness and warm gear matter more than technical skill, and no climbing is involved. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, climb at a steady pace, and tell the guide about any headache. Swotah guides set an acclimatising pace and carry a first-aid kit.
